The Jews and the Christians Are Not the Original Names of the Revealed Religion Appointed by Allah for the Prophets, but Names Created by Human Beings

Allah does indeed mention the terms "Jews" and "Christians" in the Quran, but Allah never established "Jews" and "Christians" as the original names of the revealed religion brought by the prophets. The Quran mentions both terms as labels created by certain groups of people, and Allah breaks, corrects, and refutes those claims in the Quran.

Premise 1: The religion of the prophets in the Quran is Islam, not Judaism or Christianity

The most precise proof in this issue is the verse about Ibrahim a.s.:

مَا كَانَ إِبۡرَٰهِيمُ يَهُودِيّٗا وَلَا نَصۡرَانِيّٗا وَلَٰكِن كَانَ حَنِيفٗا مُّسۡلِمٗا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ

“Ibrahim was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was one inclining toward truth, a Muslim [submitting to Allah]. And he was not of the polytheists.”

Surah Ali 'Imran 3:67

This verse leaves no room at all for Judaism or Christianity. Allah denies that those two labels originated from Ibrahim a.s., even though both sides had tried to trace their beliefs back to Ibrahim a.s.

Instead, Allah replaces both of those labels, "Jew" and "Christian," with two qualities that He approves of, namely "hanif" and "Muslim."

This clearly proves that the original name of the revealed path of the prophets was neither Judaism nor Christianity. The name that Allah highlights is submission to Him, which is Islam.

Premise 2: Musa himself called his people to be muslimin, not to become Jews

Observe the wording of Musa a.s. in the Quran:

وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ يَٰقَوۡمِ إِن كُنتُمۡ ءَامَنتُم بِٱللَّهِ فَعَلَيۡهِ تَوَكَّلُوٓاْ إِن كُنتُم مُّسۡلِمِينَ

“And Moses said, O my people, if you have believed in Allah, then rely upon Him, if you should be Muslims.”

Surah Yunus 10:84

This verse is very important. Musa a.s. did not say, “if you are Jews.” Instead, Musa referred to his people as "muslimin."

So from the standpoint of the Quranic text, the path Musa called his people to was to submit to Allah as muslimin, not to gather under a man-made religious label called Judaism.

Premise 3: The claim that “only Jews or Christians will enter Paradise” came from human beings, not from Allah

Allah the Most High says:

وَقَالُواْ لَن يَدۡخُلَ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ إِلَّا مَن كَانَ هُودًا أَوۡ نَصَٰرَىٰۗ تِلۡكَ أَمَانِيُّهُمۡۗ قُلۡ هَاتُواْ بُرۡهَٰنَكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰدِقِينَ

“And they say, ‘None will enter Paradise except one who is a Jew or a Christian.’ That is [merely] their wishful thinking, Say, ‘Produce your proof, if you should be truthful.’”

Surah al-Baqarah 2:111

Here, the structure of the verse carries enormous meaning in explaining this matter to us.

The verse begins with وَقَالُواْ, meaning, “And they say.” That means the Quran is recording the claim of those human groups themselves, not establishing the original name of the revealed religion.

Allah even describes that claim as “their wishful thinking” and commands that proof be demanded from them. This directly destroys the argument that “Jews” and “Christians” were the original religious names that Allah sent down to the prophets.

Premise 4: When they invite people to become Jews or Christians, Allah cancels that claim and directs mankind back to the millah of Ibrahim

Allah the Most High says:

وَقَالُواْ كُونُواْ هُودًا أَوۡ نَصَٰرَىٰ تَهۡتَدُواْۗ قُلۡ بَلۡ مِلَّةَ إِبۡرَٰهِـۧمَ حَنِيفٗاۖ وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ

“They say, ‘Be Jews or Christians [so] you will be guided.’ Say, ‘Rather, [we follow] the religion of Ibrahim, inclining toward truth, and he was not of the polytheists.’”

Surah al-Baqarah 2:135

This verse cuts deep. They call people into two labeled groups, either Jews or Christians.

Allah never instructed the Prophet to answer, “Yes, choose one.”

Allah instructed the Prophet to answer with a clear rejection: بَلۡ مِلَّةَ إِبۡرَٰهِـۧمَ حَنِيفٗا

That means true guidance is not tied at all to the labels Jew or Christian. True guidance is returned to the path of Ibrahim, the hanif.

This once again shows that those two terms are not the original names of the revealed religion of the prophets.

Premise 5: The Quran itself shows that “Nasrani” is a label spoken by a human group

Allah the Most High says:

وَمِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا نَصَٰرَىٰٓ أَخَذۡنَا مِيثَٰقَهُمۡ فَنَسُواْ حَظّٗا مِّمَّا ذُكِّرُواْ بِهِۦ فَأَغۡرَيۡنَا بَيۡنَهُمُ ٱلۡعَدَاوَةَ وَٱلۡبَغۡضَآءَ إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِۚ وَسَوۡفَ يُنَبِّئُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَصۡنَعُونَ

“And from those who say, ‘We are Christians,’ We took their covenant, but they forgot a portion of that of which they were reminded. So We caused among them animosity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection. And Allah is going to inform them about what they used to do.”

Surah al-Ma'idah 5:14

Notice once again how the Quran presents that term.

Allah says, “those who say: indeed, we are Nasara.”

This shows that “Nasrani” appears only as an identity adopted and spoken by a human group.

The verse never says, “I named the true religion Nasrani.” No.

It is only mentioned by Allah as an identity they themselves claimed, and then Allah evaluates their condition.

Premise 6: The Torah is indeed revelation from Allah, but the prophets who judged by it are described as those who submitted themselves, not as carriers of a religion called Judaism

Allah the Most High says:

إِنَّآ أَنزَلۡنَا ٱلتَّوۡرَىٰةَ فِيهَا هُدٗى وَنُورٞۚ يَحۡكُمُ بِهَا ٱلنَّبِيُّونَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسۡلَمُواْ لِلَّذِينَ هَادُواْ وَٱلرَّبَّٰنِيُّونَ وَٱلۡأَحۡبَارُ بِمَا ٱسۡتُحۡفِظُواْ مِن كِتَٰبِ ٱللَّهِ وَكَانُواْ عَلَيۡهِ شُهَدَآءَۚ

“Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light. The prophets who submitted [to Allah] judged by it for the Jews, as did the rabbis and scholars by that with which they were entrusted of the Scripture of Allah, and they were witnesses thereto...”

Excerpt from Surah al-Ma'idah 5:44

This verse is very clear and powerful. The Torah truly is revelation from Allah. That is not in dispute. But the prophets who judged by it are described as ٱلَّذِينَ أَسۡلَمُواْ, meaning the prophets who submitted themselves to Allah.

They judged for the Jews, not because the religion of the prophets was called Judaism. This distinction is very important.

The revelation is from Allah. The prophets are Muslim.

What is referred to as “the Jews” in this verse is the group known by that name.

So the term “Jew” in this verse appears as the name of a community receiving judgment, not as the original name of the religion of the prophets who judged by that revelation.

Premise 7: The Quran speaks of Jews and Christians as groups making specific doctrinal claims

Allah the Most High says:

وَقَالَتِ ٱلۡيَهُودُ عُزَيۡرٌ ٱبۡنُ ٱللَّهِ وَقَالَتِ ٱلنَّصَٰرَى ٱلۡمَسِيحُ ٱبۡنُ ٱللَّهِۖ ذَٰلِكَ قَوۡلُهُم بِأَفۡوَٰهِهِمۡۖ يُضَٰهِـُٔونَ قَوۡلَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِن قَبۡلُۚ قَٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُۖ أَنَّىٰ يُؤۡفَكُونَ

“The Jews say, ‘Ezra is the son of Allah,’ and the Christians say, ‘The Messiah is the son of Allah.’ That is their statement from their mouths, they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before [them]. May Allah destroy them, how are they deluded?”

Surah at-Tawbah 9:30

This verse confirms once again that the Quran is speaking about groups making specific claims with their own mouths.

This is not, in any sense, the establishment of an original revealed religious name. This is exposure and unveiling of communities that built their own identities and doctrinal claims under their own labels.

Summary and Refutation

After all of these proofs across the seven premises above, the clearest summary is as follows:

It is not true to say that Allah established “Jews” and “Christians” as the original names of the religion of the prophets.

What is true is that the Quran mentions both terms as labels created by human groups who made certain claims, and then Allah corrected, challenged, and refuted those claims.

Conclusion

Ibrahim a.s. is not described as a Jew and not described as a Christian. Allah describes him as hanifan musliman.

Musa a.s. called his people to become muslimin.

When people claimed that only Jews or Christians would enter Paradise, Allah described it as their wishful thinking.

When they called others to become Jews or Christians, Allah broke that claim and returned mankind to the millah of Ibrahim.

When the Quran mentions Christians, it says: those who say, we are Nasara.

When the Quran mentions the Torah, it describes the prophets who judged by it as those who submitted themselves to Allah.

All of that is enough to realize and be certain that:

The religion of the prophets is Islam. Jews and Christians are not the original names of the revealed message of the prophets.
